Review: Mareta Maverick 10’8” paddle board

In this blog we review the all new Mareta Maverick paddle board in a rather fetching aqua colour. Running a SUP rental company, we get to test out many different stand up paddle boards, which allows us to give honest suggestions and recommendations to our customers looking to purchase their own iSUP.

So when our friends Myles and Chris from Mareta got in touch and asked if we’d be interested in reviewing their new iSUP, we jumped at the chance.

Here’s the Mareta Maverick inflatable stand up paddle board.

It also comes in a gorgeous kiwi green colour.

First impressions
So first thing to note about this all rounder board is the generous amount of accessories this package comes with, this impressive SUP haul includes:

  • 100% Carbon Fibre Mareta Paddle

  •  Elite Wheeled Adventure Carry Rucksack

  •  20L Waterproof Deck Bag

  •  Shoulder Strap

  •  Waterproof Phone Case

  •  6 point Bow/4 Point Stern Cargo Nets

  •  Go-Pro/Camera Mount

  •  Dual Flow SUP Pump

  •  10” Ankle Leash

  • Repair Kit

Paddle
We’re pleasantly surprised with the inclusion of a carbon fibre paddle, as most entry level SUP packages come with an aluminium one. Coming from experience, aluminium paddles need replacing rather sharpish as they often sink.

Dry bag & phone case
A 20L dry bag/deck bag and a waterproof phone case is a welcomed addition, as having these items will save you spending hours searching a certain popular auction website for SUP accessories. More time on the water 💦  We are quite the fan of Mareta’s roll top deck bag. We love how it clips on to the front of the board, so you don't have to worry about it slipping from underneath the bunjies. Great touch! You might want to upgrade the phone case though, the plastic is a little flimsy. But the bag is great quality.

Carry bag
The carry rucksack is made to a good quality and the stitching seems strong, meaning you won’t be worried about general wear and tear, wheeled as well for easier transport. There’s also a nice netted pouch on the side to keep your paddle in.

GoPro mount
Our favourite thing about this board has to be the integrated GoPro mount feature. This is normally reserved for the more premium makes of paddle boards, so nice touch Mareta. GoPro mounts marketed for SUP’s, would be a suction mount fitting - which suits a hard board better than an inflatable. The suctions lose their stick. So an integrated mount really is awesome.

Pump
The Mareta Maverick comes with a standard dual action pump. If we’re honest, it’s not the best quality.

Ankle leash & shoulder strap
Standard coiled ankle leash, comfy and does the job perfectly. We’d like to mention that an ankle leash is better suited for slow moving deepwater rivers, you would need to invest in a quick release belt if you’re paddling out at sea. The shoulder strap is another cool addition, not many boards include this. It’s one of those accessories that you don’t use as much as you think you would, but it’s nice to have. We think some padding on the shoulder strap would be a great addition.

The stand up paddle board
The Maverick is the average entry level size, stable and perfect for a beginner board. Measuring at 10’8”, 32”, 4.7” so slightly thinner than most, with a max ride weight of 115kg

Mereta describes the construction to be a double layer dropstitch, which increases stability. These boards definitely feel solid and robust, but this does come with a small disadvantage, it’s weight. The iSUP itself weighs 12.7kg. Compared to other boards of similar dimensions, it is noticeable when carrying the board to your desired launch spot. Luckily they include that over the shoulder carry strap. To help you understand the weight, here’s a comparison.

  • iSUP A 10’, 32”, 5” - 9.6kg

  • iSUP B 10’6”, 34”, 6” - 9.6kg

  • iSUP C (also dual layer) 10’6”, 32”, 6” - 10kg

The guys at Mareta have explained to us that the thickness of the board helps reduce wind drag which is especially important for windy conditions, but perhaps not so important for the Thames - where we have tried and tested the board.

Like nearly all entry level boards, you will get the standard plastic slide in and clip fin. Which for a beginner is fine, as they are easy to fit and cheap to replace if broken or lost. The iSUP also includes integrated front and rear bunjies, Maverick refers to them as cargo nets.

The Mareta Maverick currently retails at £489 and you can either purchase it on Amazon here or via their website here, and in case you were wondering, yes the delivery cost is included!

The iSUP does have a few little things that we feel could be improved, such as the attention to detail on the gluing and stitching. The EVA foam was a little off centre, which we wouldn't expect to see on a board of that price. Mareta have said that their boards are handmade and confirmed that in regards to the gluing, this is cosmetic and they have tightened QA control at their factory since sending up this board.

Although the Mareta Maverick comes with an impressive list of accessories, they are all available to buy online individually. The beauty of the accessories package is that it saves you time.

Mareta also offers an 11'4 touring/Surfing board with the same package of accessories, check it out on their website - don’t forget to change the site from Hong Kong Dollars to GBP.

Mareta was formed in Hong Kong in 2015 by cousins, Myles Winter and Chris Ridley- Smith.  The cousins have spent their lives sailing, boating and paddling together across the world from the West Coast of Scotland to the South China Sea. We love that Mareta Watersports is a family run company, and it’s exciting to see them expand into the UK. We wish them all the luck on this exciting venture 😊😊😊
